Who ChatGPT and Google AI Mode Recommend for HVAC in Glendale, AZ

For the Glendale HVAC owner who typed their own company name into ChatGPT last week — and watched it not come back.

On 2026-09-12, Kodec ran one query — the exact query a Glendale homeowner types — through ChatGPT and Google AI Mode, and published both answers unedited: “I need a good HVAC company in Glendale AZ for an AC repair. Who do people actually recommend, and what should I look for to pick a good one?”

The overlap between the two answers is zero

ChatGPT's answer named 12 distinct Glendale-area businesses (counting AirZona HVAC Inc. and its “Air-zona A/C Heating & Ventilation” variant as one). Google AI Mode's answer named four. Not one name appears on both lists. The five in ChatGPT's numbered rankings — in the order it ranked them — are Christian Brothers Plumbing, A/C, & Electrical, The AC Team Heating & Cooling LLC, All Season Plumbing And Air, UFirst Heating & Cooling, and AirZona HVAC Inc. The four names Google AI Mode put on the page are AZ Aircompany LLC, AZ Comfort Specialists, Desert Heroes HVAC, and CLC Mechanical.

  • Only in ChatGPT's answer: Christian Brothers Plumbing, A/C, & Electrical; The AC Team Heating & Cooling LLC; All Season Plumbing And Air; UFirst Heating & Cooling; AirZona HVAC Inc.
  • Only in Google AI Mode's answer: AZ Aircompany LLC; AZ Comfort Specialists; Desert Heroes HVAC; CLC Mechanical
  • In both answers: none

Below its numbered five, ChatGPT also named Action Air (“BestProsInTown #2: 4.9”), Freddy's A/C & Refrigeration LLC and ChillTek AC Repair (both rated “Superb” at 5.0), Desert Sky AC & Heating LLC (Thumbtack, 4.9), Glendale HVAC Services and Advantage Home Performance Inc. (5.0 ratings, sourced to a Google Maps ranking set), and Glendale HVAC Contractor Pro LLC, which it says receives favorable mentions in Reddit threads. None of those seven appear in Google AI Mode's answer either.

Where each answer came from — nine domains vs. four Reddit threads

ChatGPT's answer carried 19 inline citations across nine distinct domains. Six point at expertise.com, three at bestprosintown.com, two each at threebestrated.com, hvacservice.io and reddit.com, and one each at serviceagent.ai, thumbtack.com, prosgrade.com and cascadelocalseo.com. Not one of those nine domains belongs to a Glendale HVAC contractor, and none belongs to a local publication. Every one is a ranked “best of” list, a paid directory, a leaderboard index or a forum thread.

Google AI Mode showed five sources, and four of them are Reddit threads: “AC company recs, I'm roasting” from r/phoenix, “best HVAC company in phoenix, az to go with? : r/hvacadvice”, plus two more entries pointing at those same two URLs under the headings “Local Community Recommendations” and “What to Look For in a Good AC Repair Company”. The fifth source is titled only “Local Experiences” and carries no domain at all. The Glendale-specific material in that answer — the four company cards with name, rating, review count, open/closed status and directions link — comes from Google's own business listings, which is also the only place in either answer where a business's own first-party website is linked.

Worth naming for what they are: ChatGPT sourced its Glendale “Google Maps rankings” claim to a leaderboard page at cascadelocalseo.com/leaderboards/hvac-glendale-az, and its #2 ranking claim to a directory index at serviceagent.ai/directory/arizona/glendale/hvac. Neither is a Glendale contractor's own site. We did not find any out-of-market HVAC company domain feeding either answer — no cross-state contractor site, no installer listing from a national retailer, no travel or lifestyle site. The junk in this layer isn't out-of-market; it's non-local-by-construction: ranking pages, leaderboards and directories that exist to rank in the query rather than to serve Glendale.

There is no Glendale journalism in the layer the AI reads

Neither engine's source set contains any local journalism. No Glendale newspaper, no local TV station, no city-domain site and no Glendale-specific publication appears among ChatGPT's nine domains or Google AI Mode's five source entries. The entire layer is aggregators (expertise.com, bestprosintown.com, threebestrated.com, hvacservice.io, prosgrade.com), directories (serviceagent.ai, thumbtack.com), a leaderboard site (cascadelocalseo.com), Reddit (reddit.com) and Google's own business listings. That absence is the structural reason the two answers look nothing alike: with no local editorial layer to anchor on, each engine falls back to what it has most of. ChatGPT fell back to ranking sites that publish Glendale pages. Google AI Mode fell back to Phoenix-subreddit threads plus its own listing cards. The Reddit threads it used are Phoenix-metro threads, so the Glendale specificity had to come from the listing cards.

BrightLocal 2026 Consumer Review

What we measured after doing this work for one HVAC contractor

A Bay Area HVAC contractor's site we tracked went from roughly 206 to roughly 2,038 daily impressions — a +421% rebound — after a navigation fix, area pages, and consistent reinforcement of the business's identity across the sources AI engines cross-check. AI-referred sessions on that site engaged at 2.08× the rate of everything else: about 50% engagement versus 24.1% for non-AI traffic. Be honest about the sample, though — that's 4 AI sessions against 399 non-AI sessions over 30 days. Small volume. What moved the number wasn't link-buying or a content blitz. It was making the business's name, category, city and service set read the same way everywhere the engines look.

How the AI built these two answers

Both engines retrieve pages, summarize what those pages already say, and repeat the names they find — they don't grade workmanship, verify a license, or visit a job site. Whatever is written about a Glendale HVAC company on the pages they trust is, near-verbatim, what they tell the next homeowner who asks.

What this means for a Glendale HVAC owner

The homeowner who asked this question on 2026-09-12 received a dozen names from ChatGPT and four from Google AI Mode and stopped reading. There is no second page inside an AI answer and no scroll past the recommendation — the research window closed inside the response. If your company isn't in those lists, nothing about your work changed; the answer simply never reached you.

We can run this exact capture in your market — same query, same two engines, same dated record of what came back and which sources fed it — and then do the identity work that moves a company into the list. Book a Call and we'll pull your market's answer first.
