On August 10, 2026, Kodec ran the exact question a Dallas homeowner types into an AI assistant when the AC dies: “I need a good HVAC company in Dallas TX for an AC repair. Who do people actually recommend, and what should I look for to pick a good one?” We ran it through ChatGPT and Google AI Mode. Both returned answers. Both named companies. The question is whether your name was one of them.
Two engines, two different shortlists
The exact overlap between the two engines' named companies is two: Rescue Air and Plumbing and Metro Air Conditioning Heating & Services appear in both answers. ChatGPT's lead list — Willard Cooling, Heating, Plumbing, & Electrical; Bacon Plumbing Heating Air Electric; Total Air & Heat; Coolinary Arts Heating & Cooling; and Rescue Air and Plumbing — comes from a Dallas AC repair guide, ConsumerAffairs, and Expertise.com. Google AI Mode's answer is built on Reddit threads and leads with smaller, independent shops that ChatGPT never mentioned. Even the second tier diverges: ChatGPT also names Texas AirZone, Serveway Heating & Air Conditioning, and Quigley Heating & Air Conditioning; Google does not.
The stakes are structural. The AI list is not a side channel anymore; it's the funnel.

Where the recommendations actually come from
ChatGPT leaned on five source domains in this capture: dallasacrepairguide.com, consumeraffairs.com, expertise.com, consumerbusinessreview.org, and reddit.com. That is a stack of affiliate review guides, consumer review aggregators, and directories. The only community signal in the entire answer is a Reddit thread. There is no local newsroom in the mix.
Google AI Mode's captured source stack is even more concentrated. The answer cites 36 sources; the captured source list shows 12 citations — 10 of them Reddit threads from r/Dallas, r/Richardson, and r/askdfw — plus Google Maps, Google's search viewer, and HVAC company blogs the answer pulled in. Two of those company blogs are out-of-market: a post on 'The Rule of 5000' from picturerockscooling.com and a page titled 'Do You Need Local AC Repairs or a System Replacement' from hvacmidtown.com. Neither is a Dallas company's site.
There is no Dallas journalism in the layer the AI reads, because there isn't any. Not one local newspaper, Dallas business journal, or TV station appears in either answer's citations. In a metro with multiple daily papers and business press, the AI's entire source layer is aggregators, directories, Reddit threads, company blogs, and the engines' own Business Profile data. That is the local information environment the AI is actually working with.
How the AI builds the answer
An AI answer is not a vetting process. It reads what other sites say about a company and repeats the names back — it does not grade workmanship. If those sources don't describe your company, the model cannot cite it.
What this means for a Dallas HVAC owner
A Dallas homeowner asking this in August is usually sitting in a hot house. They will call the first two names the AI answers with. If you're not in the list, the call already happened — and the AI never knew you existed.
The research window ends inside an AI answer. If you're not in the list, the call already happened.
The fix we've seen work
We tracked a Bay Area HVAC contractor's site through this exact problem. The work wasn't link-buying or a content blitz. It was a navigation fix, area pages, and consistent business-identity reinforcement across the sources the AI cross-checks. Daily impressions rebounded from about 206 to about 2,038 — a +421% increase. AI-referred engagement ran at 2.08× the site's non-AI engagement (about 50% vs 24.1%). The honest caveat: that's 4 AI sessions against 399 non-AI sessions in a 30-day window — small volume, but it was zero before.
The same capture we ran for Dallas can be run for your market. The same consistency fix can be applied to your business identity so the next time a homeowner asks “who do people actually recommend,” the AI has a citable reason to name you.
