On August 6, 2026, Kodec ran the exact question a Sugar Land homeowner types into an AI assistant when their AC dies in July heat — a plain-language request for a good HVAC company and how to pick one. We asked it, verbatim, to both ChatGPT and Google AI Mode, and published exactly what came back: the companies named, the sources those answers leaned on, and what a Sugar Land HVAC owner searching their own name today would actually find.
Zero Overlap at the Top — Then Two Names Resurface
None of ChatGPT's top five — Airco USA, Smart Air, Martin Mechanical, All Cool A/C & Heating, Air Express — appear anywhere in Google AI Mode's four-company answer. And none of AI Mode's four — Sun Air Conditioning & Heating, Abel Mechanical Services, Southern Comfort Heating & Air Services, Jackson Air & Heat — crack ChatGPT's headline five. But further down ChatGPT's full answer, in a section citing the same r/sugarland Reddit thread AI Mode drew from, ChatGPT does mention Southern Comfort Heating & Air Services ('for honest repairs on aging systems') and Abel Mechanical Services ('for reliable service') — the same two companies Google AI Mode features as half its entire answer. Same source, opposite weighting: ChatGPT treats them as an afterthought buried in item 14 of a 14-item list; Google AI Mode treats them as two of only four names it surfaces.

What the Two Engines Actually Read
ChatGPT's 9 sources were entirely directory and aggregator sites: expertise.com, bestprosintown.com, angi.com, verifiednode.com, reviews.birdeye.com, homeguide.com, bbb.org, homeadvisor.com, and the r/sugarland Reddit thread. Google AI Mode pulled from 20 sources, and its own Business Profile listings for Sun Air, Abel Mechanical, and Jackson Air & Heat did the heaviest lifting — but the source list is also carrying junk. baycarehvac.com, cited as a source, is titled 'AC Repair in Salisbury & Delmarva' — a Maryland service area on the Delmarva Peninsula, nowhere near Sugar Land. comforttemp.com is titled 'I'm looking for quotes from reputable companies for a new AC unit installation in the Gainesville, FL area... Top 2026 Guide' — a Florida guide. austinairconditioning.com is titled 'HVAC Services in Manor, TX,' a market outside Austin, not Houston. icareaircare.com covers 'Air Conditioning Repair Zephyrhills FL' — another Florida service area. Four of the twenty sources feeding a Sugar Land AC-repair answer describe HVAC work in Maryland, Florida, and a different Texas metro entirely.
No Local Journalism in the Layer Either Engine Reads
Neither engine cited a Sugar Land or Fort Bend County news outlet, chamber-of-commerce writeup, or local publication. The entire source layer for both engines is aggregators — Expertise, Angi, HomeAdvisor, BestProsInTown, Birdeye, HomeGuide, BBB, VerifiedNode — plus Reddit threads, Google's own Business Profile data, and, on the AI Mode side, other HVAC companies' own websites in other states. There is no independent local reporting anywhere in what either model read before naming names.
What Google AI Mode Told Homeowners to Watch For
Google AI Mode's answer didn't stop at naming four companies — it also coached the searcher on what to distrust. Quoting directly: 'Beware of massive corporate overhead: Local consensus on community boards warns that heavily advertised, massive regional names (often pushed hard on local TV or radio) sometimes carry massive overhead — translating to aggressive sales pitches or inflated part markups.' It also told the reader to verify a TACL license through the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation before booking. None of that guidance names a company — it's advice layered on top of the four the model had already picked.
How the Answer Gets Built
Neither engine graded a repair job. Both models read what directories, review platforms, and forum threads already say about a business, then repeat the pattern back — which is why consistent citation across those sources decides who gets named, not who did the best work last week.

What We're Seeing Move When This Gets Fixed
On a Bay Area HVAC contractor's site we tracked, daily impressions rebounded from roughly 206 to 2,038 — a 421% jump — after a navigation fix, new area pages, and consistent business-identity signals across the sources AI models cross-check. Sessions referred from AI engines converted at roughly 2.08x the rate of other traffic (about 50% engagement vs. 24.1%) — though on a small sample, 4 AI sessions against 399 non-AI sessions over 30 days, that's a gap worth watching, not yet a trend to bank on. The work wasn't link-buying or a content blitz. It was making the business's identity consistent across the layer the AI reads.

What This Means for a Sugar Land HVAC Owner
If you own an HVAC company in Sugar Land and you're not one of the names above, the research already happened somewhere you couldn't see it. The homeowner asked, got an answer with a phone number attached, and moved on. Being unnamed isn't a verdict on your work — it's an absence in the layer these models actually read.
