Who ChatGPT and Google AI Mode Recommend for HVAC in Cypress, TX

On August 8, 2026, Kodec ran the exact question a Cypress homeowner types into an AI assistant when their AC goes out — through both ChatGPT and Google AI Mode. Then, over the following week, we opened the website of every company either engine named and read what was actually there. This page publishes what came back from the engines, unedited, and what we found behind each name.

The two engines agreed on nothing

ChatGPT's top five — PHR A/C & Heating, Better Than Best A/C and Heating, Diamond-Aire Mechanical, Famous A/C & Heat, and AKKO Air Conditioning & Heating Services — share zero names with Google AI Mode's two headline picks, Cy-Fair Mechanical and ATS Mechanical Heating & AC. That is a flat zero-company overlap between the two answers a Cypress homeowner is most likely to read first, on the same day, for the same question. Cy-Fair Mechanical does appear inside ChatGPT's longer answer, once through a Birdeye listing and once in a Reddit thread, but it never made ChatGPT's structured top five. Google AI Mode put the same company first.

What we found when we opened every cited company's website

Between August 8 and August 17, 2026, we attempted to open the website of each of the seven companies the two engines named, read what was actually there, and pull the review record behind each one. The teardowns below are forensic — what each site does and does not say, where each citation actually came from — and make no claim about the quality of any company's work.

PHR A/C & Heating — ChatGPT's first pick has no website

PHR A/C & Heating, ChatGPT's first named recommendation, has no company website. Search returns only directory listings — a BBB profile that is not accredited and not rated, and an unclaimed National Contractor Index entry — plus the Angi row carrying the 4.9 rating and 31 reviews ChatGPT quoted. The "technician named Erick" in ChatGPT's Angi tag is the owner, Erick Portillo, who runs the business as a sole proprietorship from a Houston 77041 address (not Cypress-specific) under Texas license TX-AC-28471, active since 2009. ChatGPT led its Cypress recommendations with a business a homeowner cannot verify beyond a directory listing.

Better Than Best A/C and Heating — a Tomball company, cited as Cypress

Better Than Best A/C and Heating does have a website, and a deep one: a FAQ page, a blog, a team page, and an on-site badge reading "EXCELLENT 530 reviews." But the site is titled "AC Repair & HVAC Services in Tomball, TX," and the company is headquartered on Tomball Parkway, roughly 25 minutes north of Cypress. Cypress is one of nine service areas it lists. ChatGPT quoted an Angi figure of 13 reviews; the company's own badge surfaces 530 Google reviews. The directory row ChatGPT read is a thinner version of the business behind it — and a Tomball one presented as a Cypress pick. Its Texas license is TACLB51059E-TX.

Diamond-Aire Mechanical — the one Cypress-based pick with an AEO-ready site

Diamond-Aire Mechanical is the one ChatGPT pick that is both genuinely Cypress-based — 17844 Mound Rd, 77433 — and equipped with a site built to be read by an answer engine: a dedicated FAQs page with five question-and-answer pairs (services offered, certified technicians, brands, warranties, scheduling), a membership program, 24/7 emergency service, and a homepage that leads with "No Sales Pressure — We Fix What's Broken — No Upsells, Just Solutions" and "No Surprise Charges — Ever." Its Texas license is TACLB15649E. ChatGPT's Angi tag — "free estimates, emergency services, fast reliable service" — is a thinner version of what the site actually says. Google's review count for Diamond-Aire is 127; ChatGPT quoted 16, from Angi.

Famous A/C & Heat — the fourth pick's website does not load

Famous A/C & Heat, ChatGPT's fourth pick, has two listed domains — famousacandheat.net and hvacspringtx.com. On August 17, 2026, neither returned a loadable page. The business is headquartered on West Mount Houston Road in the 77037 zip code, in north Houston near Spring, not Cypress. It is not BBB-accredited or rated, and has operated since 2007 under owner Rigoberto Elias. ChatGPT's "straightforward, painless, reliable" characterization came from an Angi row of 53 reviews. The website a homeowner would click through to from that recommendation is unreachable.

AKKO Air Conditioning & Heating Services — the second pick with no website

AKKO Air Conditioning & Heating Services, ChatGPT's fifth pick, has no company website that search surfaces — only an Angi and HomeAdvisor profile listing 4.89 from 90 reviews, seven years in business, and the single characterization "Quick response." It is the second directory-only business in ChatGPT's top five, alongside PHR. No street address, no website, and no license number are publicly available beyond the directory listing itself.

Cy-Fair Mechanical — AI Mode's first pick, cited for what its reviewers say

Cy-Fair Mechanical, Google AI Mode's first pick, is Cypress-based — 13529 Skinner Rd, 77429 — but its website is a single page. There is no FAQ, no per-city service-area page, no blog, and no reviews page; "Our Story," "Our Guarantee," and "Our Services" are anchors on the homepage, not separate pages. The site repeats a free-quote call to action and claims "over 25 years" in business and to be "the #1 AC company in the Greater Houston area." AI Mode's praise — "honest, no-nonsense evaluations and reasonable repair pricing" — appears nowhere on that site. It came from Cy-Fair's Google Business Profile, where 191 reviews average 4.9, a reviewer named K HO wrote that the technician "offered honest advice on what needs to be done, rather than overselling unnecessary work," and the listing shows the company open 24 hours, a fact the website never states. The engine cited Cy-Fair for what its customers say in reviews, on a site that publishes none of them.

ATS Mechanical — AI Mode's second pick, whose site mirrors its reviews

ATS Mechanical, AI Mode's second pick, is the structural opposite of Cy-Fair. Its site has a dedicated /cypress-tx/ page and eight Cypress service sub-pages (AC repair, AC service, air duct installation, attic insulation, commercial HVAC installation, ductless HVAC repair, heating repair, HVAC repair), a blog, a financing page, a named maintenance plan called the ATS Savers Club, commercial case studies, and thirteen Google reviews embedded on the Cypress page with the reviewers' names. ATS claims 32 years in business, since 1993, and surfaces "Over 500 Google Reviews!" on-site. AI Mode said ATS is praised for "thorough, transparent diagnostics where technicians actually show you the failing part or readouts rather than just handing you a high bill." The on-site reviews match that distribution: of the thirteen, 69% name a specific technician (Barry, Brock, Jordan, Shaun, or Tom), 62% describe the technician explaining the diagnosis, and 38% mention no upselling or a fair price — including David Gooch's "no attempt to sell me something I didn't need" and Randy Gillis's "of the three bids I received, ATS was the only one that mentioned that." The engine's characterization is the site's own review corpus, published on a page built for Cypress.

Two engines, two layers of the index

Read side by side, the seven teardowns show two engines working from different evidence. ChatGPT's top five are Angi directory rows: two businesses (PHR, AKKO) with no website at all, two (Better Than Best, Famous) headquartered outside Cypress, one (Famous) with a website that does not load, and only one (Diamond-Aire) genuinely Cypress-based with a real, AEO-ready site. Neither engine tested a repair or graded workmanship. They repeated what was already indexed, from different layers of the index.

The r/CypressTX thread both engines cited makes the gap visible. The homeowner who posted it asked for someone "honest and affordable." The six companies Redditors named were Matt Starr (two votes, described as "the go to guy in my neighborhood" with "not much of an online presence"), AC Comfort, Cy-Fair Mechanical, Mike Phan with Absolute Comfort, Mike Morris A/C, and Ryan's Air Conditioning in Tomball. The single most detailed comment in the thread was a warning: "Avoid Aire Serve Northwest like the plague because they are expensive, yet do low quality work and upsell like crazy." ChatGPT's top five missed every one of those community names except Cy-Fair, which appeared only in its Birdeye aside. Google AI Mode named Cy-Fair, referenced Matt Starr, and carried the Aire Serv warning — it read the thread it cited.

Neither engine tested a repair or graded workmanship — they repeated what was already indexed. What separates a business that gets cited from one that does not, in this capture, is not the quality of the work. It is whether the no-upsell, honest, fair-price signal that customers write into reviews is present in the layer the engine happens to read.

What this means for a Cypress HVAC owner
